What is Online?
Online Editing is post-creative edit timeline management. Traditional editorial workflows utilize proxy media for faster speeds in the creative edit. Once locked the timeline goes to “online” to be returned back to the Camera Original Media at the finishing resolution. The relinking process can be challenging, as the Camera Original Media is usually very data heavy and requires a lot of computer processing power.
During this process, the “plates” for visual effects are distributed to the visual effects vendors, and graphics or temporary effects are replaced with their higher resolution counterparts. Any respeed effects, transforms, and stabilizations are also done during this time.
The Online Editor is usually brought onto a team for the entire finishing process. They are responsible for keeping up to date with any visual effect updates that come in, as well as media organization, preparing the timelines for color, and whatever technical requirements are needed for the distribution platforms.
This step is essential before being handed off to a colorist or delivered for distribution.
